Your Questions, Answered
-
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) targets pigment in the hair follicle to reduce hair growth over time. It works best when done consistently across multiple sessions.
-
Hair grows in cycles, so multiple sessions are required. Most clients need a course of treatments spaced several weeks apart to see optimal results. Your therapist will create a plan based on your hair type, skin tone, and treatment area.
-
Most clients describe the sensation as warm or slightly prickly rather than painful. Our technology includes built-in cooling to keep treatments as comfortable as possible.
-
IPL can be performed on a wide range of skin types, but settings must be adjusted carefully. During your consultation, we’ll assess your skin and let you know if IPL is suitable for you.
-
No, waxing, plucking, threading, or hair removal creams should be avoided during your course of treatment, as the hair needs to remain in the follicle. Shaving is perfectly fine.
-
You may notice a reduction in hair growth after the first few sessions, with finer and slower regrowth over time. Results improve gradually as treatments continue.
-
No. Natural sun exposure, fake tan, or spray tan in the treatment area can increase the risk of irritation or pigmentation. Skin must be free from all forms of tanning before treatment.
-
Temporary redness, warmth, or mild swelling can occur after treatment and usually settles quickly. Your therapist will explain possible side effects and aftercare in detail before your session.
-
Yes, IPL is suitable for all genders and can be used on areas such as the back, chest, shoulders, face, and more.
-
IPL significantly reduces hair growth but is not considered permanent. Maintenance sessions may be required over time, depending on hormonal changes and individual hair growth patterns.
pre & post laser care
before
Please shave the area the night before your appointment. Avoid waxing, threading, or hair removal creams; the hair needs to be present in the follicle for IPL to work effectively. If you don’t have time to shave, we can assist in salon for a small additional cost.
Avoid fake tan or spray tan on the treatment area, and make sure there has been no sun exposure for at least two weeks prior.
On the day of your appointment, arrive with clean skin. Avoid moisturiser, perfumes, deodorants, or active skincare on the area being treated.
Try to avoid heavy exercise beforehand so your skin is calm and at a normal temperature.
Let us know if there have been any changes to your medical history or medications, and please advise us if there is any chance you may be pregnant.
during
You’ll be asked to remove clothing from the area being treated so we can work safely and effectively.
We’ll cleanse the skin and confirm the treatment area before setting the machine to suit your skin tone and hair type.
Once everything is set, we’ll begin the treatment using settings designed to be as efficient and comfortable as possible.
We’ll talk you through what to expect and check in throughout the appointment. If anything feels uncomfortable, just let us know.
after
Try to avoid touching or rubbing the treated area and keep it as clean as possible for the first 24 hours.
Wear loose clothing to prevent irritation, and use only gentle, soothing products that are fragrance-free and suitable for sensitive skin.
For 48 hours, avoid heat and excessive sweating including hot showers, workouts, swimming, spas, saunas, and hot yoga.
Avoid fake tan and sun exposure between sessions. Always use sunscreen on treated areas, and if needed, shave between appointments rather than waxing.
Your therapist will guide you on timing between sessions to achieve the best long-term results.

We use advanced IPL technology with built-in cooling to make treatments as safe and comfortable as possible. That said, everyone’s skin responds differently, and like any clinical treatment, some side effects can occur.
Some clients experience a mild histamine response after treatment. This can look like small raised bumps or redness and usually settles within minutes, but for more sensitive skin it may last up to 24–48 hours. This is a normal reaction to the hair being treated. Cooling gels, cold compresses, or antihistamines can help calm the area. In rare cases, a medical professional may recommend a cortisone cream.
If you experience an unusual reaction such as intense redness, burning, or discomfort, apply a cold compress immediately and contact us so we can advise on next steps. These reactions are very uncommon and are most often linked to sun exposure or not following pre- or post-care instructions.
While IPL is less likely to cause pigmentation changes than other laser treatments, some clients may notice temporary darkening of the skin in treated areas. This happens because IPL targets pigment in both the hair and skin. In most cases, this fades over time, similar to a tan.
For clients with deeper skin tones (Fitzpatrick Skin Type IV and above), a pigment blocker may be recommended, particularly for facial treatments, to help reduce the risk of pigmentation. This should be used for two weeks prior to treatment and throughout your course. We recommend speaking with a medical professional to determine what’s most suitable for your skin.
By proceeding with IPL treatment, you acknowledge and accept these possible side effects. As they are considered normal and known risks of treatment, refunds are not offered for reactions such as histamine responses, pigmentation changes, or irritation.
book a consultation
Before beginning treatment, we take the time to assess your skin tone, hair type, medical history, and goals to make sure IPL is the right option for you. This allows us to tailor settings safely and create a treatment plan that gives you the best possible results.
We’ll also walk you through how IPL works, what to expect during your sessions, and how to prep and care for your skin throughout your course. It’s a chance to ask questions, raise concerns, and feel confident before moving forward.
